Boater Term - The Helm
The helm is the part of the boat that is used to steer and control it. The person at the helm controls the rudder in the water, which controls the direction of the boat. If someone driving a boat were to ask someone to “take the helm”, then they are asking that person to be in charge of controlling the boat.
The Helm of an Azimut Yacht
The helm can be thought of as a command center of sorts for a captain in a yacht, or it could be as simple as a wheel or a tiller on a smaller vessel. Tiller outboard motors, which use tillers instead of wheels to steer, are popular on small boats, as they leave more space on the boats and tend to offer better control.
Featured Manufacturer - Beneteau
Beneteau is a French boat builder that was founded 1884 by Benjamin Beneteau in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, France. The Beneteau brand today is owned by the holding company Groupe Beneteau, which trades on the Paris Stock Exchange under the ticker BEN. Groupe Beneteau today also owns the Jeanneau, Lagoon, Prestige, Delphia, Four Winns, Glastron, WellCraft and Monte Carlo Yachts brands.
The Beneteau Oceanis 60 is the latest version of Beneteau’s flagship vessel, and is the third collaboration between yacht designers Lorenzo Argento and Roberto Biscontini. The latest version of the Beneteau Oceanis 60 is making its U.S. debut at the Miami International Boat Show this week.
